Muskoka-Inspired Retreat
A disconnected backyard reimagined into a cohesive space that brings the feel of the north closer to home and family and friends closer together.
Plenty of space—no real connection
When these clients came to us, their property checked a few boxes—it was large, and it had a pool. But beyond that, it needed help.
The existing pool was surrounded by overgrown, dated landscaping, making what should have been the focal point feel uninviting. At the same time, significant elevation changes across the backyard made the space feel disconnected and difficult to use with any real intention.
Despite the size of the property, there wasn’t a cohesive outdoor space to truly enjoy. And that’s what they wanted to change.
They were looking to create a luxury outdoor environment—one that brought the relaxed, natural feel of their Muskoka cottage into their Oakville backyard. It needed to feel intentional, with distinct spaces for gathering, relaxing, and spending time together as a family—all while matching the premium look and quality of their home.
Designed around the land
On a property like this, with significant changes in elevation, the design had to work with the natural topography—not against it.
Rather than forcing a layout onto the space, we used those grade variations to our advantage—shaping distinct, well-defined zones throughout the property. Each area was thoughtfully positioned to feel connected, while still serving its own purpose.
Just as important was the process behind it. From the start, this was a highly collaborative project, with clear communication and ongoing input from the homeowners at every stage. The design evolved through that partnership—refined step by step to ensure every detail felt right.
That shared approach carried through the entire project, resulting in a space that not only looks exceptional, but truly reflects how the homeowners wanted to live in it.
The new favourite place to be together
Today, the backyard is everything it wasn’t before. It’s inviting, intentional, and ready to be enjoyed by friends and family.
The pool is now properly framed and fully accessible, no longer an afterthought but a real destination. What used to be overlooked is now the centre of the fun—from cannonball competitions to quiet late-night dips, and everything in between.
The cabana and fireplace extend the space well beyond the height of summer—making it just as enjoyable in the early morning as it is long after the sun goes down.
But more than anything, this has become a space the whole family gravitates toward. It’s where kids and their friends want to spend time, where parents can relax, and where everyone naturally comes together.
And for us, that’s what it’s all about—creating spaces that not only look beautiful, but bring people together.
