A tight inner-city lot transformed into a private, functional space that finally feels like theirs.
It just wasn’t working
When these homeowners came to us, their 21-foot-wide inner-city lot had plenty of potential—but it wasn’t being used. And just as importantly, it didn’t feel like theirs.
The front yard lacked both curb appeal and function, while out back, limited privacy and ongoing drainage issues made the space difficult to enjoy after even a light rain. The rear parking pad was also awkward to access, leaving valuable space underused.
And on a lot this size, every square foot matters.
They were looking to transform both the front and backyard, creating a private, low-maintenance retreat where they could relax, entertain family and friends, and get their green thumbs dirty. Beyond aesthetics, they also wanted to solve the pesky drainage and parking issues once and for all.
Fixing what held it back—for good
Transforming this property meant solving a few key issues—while working within the constraints of a narrow lot.
Drainage was the first priority. We installed a custom system using 8x8 French drains and permeable Aquastorm pavers with turf inlays, allowing water to move efficiently through the space after rainfall. As part of that solution, we were also able to improve access to the rear parking pad—making it far easier to use, no matter the weather.
Privacy was another challenge. With neighbouring homes close on both sides, the goal was to create a sense of seclusion without closing the space in. A combination of privacy screens and lush plantings helped strike that balance—adding coverage while still keeping the yard open and inviting.
All of this had to come together within a tight footprint. Every design and construction decision was intentional—making the most of each square foot while balancing function, privacy, and overall feel.
Unused becomes unforgettable
This project is a transformation in every sense of the word. What was once unusable and uninspiring is now a source of pride and joy.
What makes it especially meaningful is how it’s brought the whole family together. The space reflects who they are and how they like to spend their time, whether that’s hosting friends or unwinding at the end of the day.
The fire feature, seating area, and hot tub have created a backyard that’s built to host—one they’re now excited to share. Meanwhile, the gardens, planters, and hardy perennials offer a hands-on connection to greenery in the middle of the city.
From front yard to backyard, it finally feels like their own. And for us, it doesn’t get much better than that.
